Reiki, A Sacred Space b y R o b i n D i b b l e

What does it mean to create a sacred space for a Reiki session?

In a Reiki session, every detail, from the ambiance to the sensations experienced, is significant. It is crucial to hold a positive regard for the client and offer support. Creating an atmosphere that exudes tranquility and trust and is free from any judgment or preconceived notions will help the client feel emotionally safe, making it easy for them to share their concerns and why they came to the Reiki session.

So many are vulnerable, and may not feel comfortable being able to share what is on their mind and heart. Honoring a space where others can freely express themselves shows tremendous grace and compassion. Reassuring them of your support allows them to let go and just be present and receive. When a client looks for Reiki, it often signifies a desire to unwind and seek healing on a physical, emotional, or even spiritual level. I realize when a person arrives, it’s beneficial to start in casual conversation and conduct a brief check-in.

It’s always wise to handle payment, a donation, and future appointments upfront. I also encourage them to share any sensations they may experience during and after the session and emphasize the importance of rehydration post-treatment. Addressing these logistical aspects at the beginning sets a smooth tone for the session. It is also soothing to suggest removing shoes. Spending a few minutes in silence, recognizing Mother Earth and intending that she will receive from us what we want to release before going into the Reiki space. In socks or bare feet, it presents an opportunity for the individual to feel grounded as they enter the Reiki space and connect with the earth beneath. After seated and relaxing, inquire, “How can I support you today?” This question prompts them to ponder their intention or what led them to the Reiki experience, while offering a safe, serene space for them to share their thoughts or emotions if they feel inclined.

As practitioners, we must also be in a positive headspace. We are human beings with our own lives, families, and responsibilities that can deplete our energy or throw us off balance. Arriving a bit early to give ourselves Reiki, center ourselves and prepare to offer Reiki to the client is essential. Since energy is palpable, especially to empaths, ensuring we are in a positive state allows us to be fully present for the individual seeking our services.

It is also important to send Reiki to the treatment room, especially looking for negative energy and dispelling it with Reiki and replacing it with the loving presence of Reiki throughout the room. Now, not everyone enjoys the same essential oils. Being mindful of scents such as incense or candles is huge. Some clients may have sensitivities or allergies. It is always considerate to inquire beforehand to create a comfortable environment. I find it so important to ask for permission. We can never assume using scented oils, lotions, or candles is okay. What I like may not be at the top of their list. The same for a heating pad. Some may get warm easily, while others the opposite. Again, just ask. Never assume. A fan? I find a sound fan outside the door is great for drowning out noise from the hallway or other clients showing up at the door. Depending on the time of the year or even the person’s preference, some may enjoy having a blanket or an eye cover. Make sure your clients are comfortable, and ask what they need. For lighting and sound, dimming the lights and playing soothing music allows the body to shift to a more in-tune state. Different sounds which have a range of frequencies can resonate with different chakra areas of the body. Choosing a song with lyrics? Sometimes, lyrics can create an experience for someone we did not intend. Just because a song has meaning to me, it may not be the same experience for the client. Selecting music with different frequencies and sounds, which induce relaxation, is key to setting the mood for a session. Remember, we are a conduit for Reiki, a tool for this loving energy. Using music with words may send a message we are not intending. Find something with flowing soothing sounds that go on and on. Pictures and symbols in the room? Choose images representing the chakras, soft colors, and positive messages. Remember that we have different spiritual paths.

A Reiki practitioner is welcoming to all people and does not show a bias to one certain path. What about personal photos hanging in the room? Do not have Reiki practitioner family photos or personal items present. Keep the space neutral, calming, and inviting for anyone. Your Reiki space is crucial for emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being, creating a welcoming space to unwind and recharge.

Ultimately, we are vessels honored to facilitate this wonderful time for the individual, allowing Reiki’s loving energy to flow and heal where needed.

Ever walk in an ice cream shop and you see all these buckets of flavors? Different colors, tastes and names? Many people connect with Spirit in different ways, that is sacred. Many even have different words for how they perceive God.

There is much pain and suffering in the world today and at the same time, through suffering we can see and feel the power of Spirit within ourselves and others. Sometimes we need to refocus and learn ways to relax in "flow". Learning to clear ourselves. Reiki provides a space for relaxation, rejuvenattion and healing.

Spiritual Direction is about holding a space to listen, talk and share about what a person needs. A desire to see and connect with the Divine in our lives.

As an Embodiment teacher of the Nonlinear Movement Method, Reiki Master and through Spiritual Direction a person can go within and explore self.

My understanding and empathy for youth in crisis has always been another soft spot through my own personal journey. Working with youth and young adults which have struggled with abandonment and divorce.

The last 12 years, my medical career has allowed me to work alongside people who have various disabilities. Learning and connecting in these situations has shown me growth personally and spiritually.
